Ingrown Toenail Surgery (Partial Nail Avulsion) â€‹

Painful, infected or constantly recurring ingrown toenails can make everyday walking — let alone sport or work — miserable. If conservative care hasn’t worked, partial nail avulsion surgery is a safe, effective and long-term solution.

At Emerge Podiatry, we perform ingrown toenail surgery in-clinic using evidence-based techniques designed to relieve pain, prevent recurrence, and get you back to normal activities as quickly as possible.

What is a Partial Nail Avulsion?

A partial nail avulsion is a minor surgical procedure where only the ingrown edge of the nail is removed, rather than the entire nail.

To reduce the chance of the nail growing back and causing ongoing problems, a chemical (phenol) is commonly applied to the nail matrix. This permanently narrows the nail while preserving its normal appearance.

✔ Targets the problem area only
✔ High success rate
✔ Minimal cosmetic change
✔ Performed under local anaesthetic

When is Ingrown Toenail Surgery Recommended?

Ingrown toenail surgery may be appropriate if you experience:

  • Recurrent or long-standing ingrown toenails

  • Ongoing pain, redness or swelling

  • Infection, discharge or granulation tissue

  • Ingrown nails interfering with sport, work or daily life

  • Failed response to nail cutting or conservative treatment

We’ll always assess whether surgery is the right option for you — not everyone needs it.

What to Expect on the Day

The procedure is straightforward and typically takes approximately 60 minutes:

  1. Local anaesthetic is used to completely numb the toe

  2. The ingrown section of nail is carefully removed

  3. A chemical is applied to prevent regrowth of the problem edge

  4. The toe is dressed and post-operative instructions are provided

Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the procedure is once the toe is numb.

Recovery & Aftercare

  • You’ll walk out of the clinic the same day

  • Mild discomfort is expected once anaesthetic wears off

  • Most people return to normal shoes within a few days

  • Sport and higher-impact activity usually resume within 2–4 weeks

  • We provide clear aftercare instructions and follow-up as required

Proper aftercare is key — and we guide you through it step by step.
